Streaming x, y Coordinates Imply Continuous Interaction During On-line Syntactic Processing

چکیده
Although many theories of on-line syntactic processing invoke the parallel activation of multiple syntactic representations, evidence supporting simultaneous activation has been inconclusive. Here, we exploited the continuous and non-ballistic properties of computer mouse movements, identified by recording streaming x, y coordinates, in order to determine the validity of serial versus parallel accounts of sentence processing. Participants heard structurally ambiguous sentences while viewing scenes with properties either supporting or not supporting the difficult relative clause interpretation. The curvatures of the elicited mousemovement trajectories revealed both an effect of visual scene, and competition between the simultaneously active syntactic representations.

Children’s Online Processing of Complex Sentences: New Evidence from a New Technique
A lack of straightforward, child-appropriate methodologies has hindered the study of on-line syntactic processing in young children. Here, we exploited the continuous and non-ballistic properties of computer mouse movements, ,, identified by recording streaming x, y coordinates, to test how young children integrate multiple sources of information on-line in order to extract meaning. Participant...

متن کاملContinuous attraction toward phonological competitors.
Certain models of spoken-language processing, like those for many other perceptual and cognitive processes, posit continuous uptake of sensory input and dynamic competition between simultaneously active representations. Here, we provide compelling evidence for this continuity assumption by using a continuous response, hand movements, to track the temporal dynamics of lexical activations during ...
متن کاملThe trajectory of center of pressure during stance phase of gait in healthy males and females using pedar-X system
Introduction and Objectives. The trajectory of center of pressure (COP) during the stance phase of gait is considered as an important parameter in assessing of dynamic balance, foot and ankle function and effectiveness of shoe and orthotics. The aim of this study was to determine the COP trajectory during stance phase of gait in healthy males and females, by means of Pedar-X plantar pressure me...

Mathematics requires precise inferences about abstract objects inaccessible to perception. How is this possible? One proposal is that mathematical reasoning, while concerned with entirely abstract objects, nevertheless relies on neural resources specialized for interacting with the world-in other words, mathematics may be grounded in spatial or sensorimotor systems. Mental arithmetic, for insta...
